FAN Take: Being The Bigger Person

FAN Take is a series that highlights trending events, issues, and decisions in the world of sports and analyzes how they may or may not factor into the Fan Controlled Football League. We would love to hear your feedback, so let us know what you think about each FAN Take!

During last summer’s U.S. Open, there was controversy over whether or not Serena Williams’ coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, was communicating with her during the match (we don’t believe he was). The only thing worse than a bad call is a bad call that overshadows a win – specifically Naomi Osaka’s first Grand Slam win. In an essay penned this month for Harper’s BAZAAR, Williams addressed the incident and revealed the text message she sent to Osaka following their match:

“Hey, Naomi! It’s Serena Williams. As I said on the court, I am so proud of you and I am truly sorry. I thought I was doing the right thing in sticking up for myself. But I had no idea the media would pit us against each other. I would love the chance to live that moment over again. I am, was, and will always be happy for you and supportive of you. I would never, ever want the light to shine away from another female, specifically another black female athlete. I can’t wait for your future, and believe me I will always be watching as a big fan! I wish you only success today and in the future. Once again, I am so proud of you. All my love and your fan, Serena.”

We’re impressed with the sportsmanship shown by Williams to her impressive opponent. So much so, that we hope to see the same kind of efforts made by our players. Do our fans have the same expectations as we do? If there is a heavily-contested outcome, do they expect there to be a dialogue between their players and the opposing team? Or do you feel that whatever happens on the field, stays on the field?

Power To The Fans!
